DIGITAL EMPOWERMENT

In this ever-changing digital world being familiar with computers is becoming an essential skill for all kinds of areas in life.

We here at PAPO believe that educating young people to become comfortable using basic software can help them tremendously in their future education and even in their search for jobs or professional career.

We offer free courses ranging from basic computer knowledge, internet skills especially on how to acquire resourceful information from the internet and usage to learning the most essential software like the Microsoft Office programs.

Our courses are open to anyone  ie both in school and the out school population who would like to improve themselves, doesn't matter how old you are or how much experience you have with computers. In school we also target their teachers so as they can use the acquired ICT skills to help in the academic performance which in turn will also improve the school enrollment of our target schools.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic there emerged a big challenge where very many employees in Kenya lost their jobs, while the few who remained were advised to work remotely from home, students and especially the university, college and tertiary students were advised to study and even do their academic assignments including exams from home .Since many of our community members lacked efficient Digital competencies skills we decided to approach an organisation called MONDO who accepted to send us 3 volunteers from ESTONIA and started a program called DIGITAL COMPETENCIES PROGRAM which they taught community members even trained Trainers of trainees(ToT) which Digital skills on how to use Digital devices such as Smartphones, laptops, desktops internet etc to work or study remotely. The Digital competencies program was developed by NGO MONDO from Estonia under the EUROPEAN DIGITAL COMPETENCE FRAMEWORK (DigComp) and has 5 key elements namely;

  • Information and Data literacy (understanding ones information needs and finding relevant digital content; storing, managing and organizing content)

  • Communication and collaboration (communicating and collaborating digitally and managing ones digital identity and reputation)

  • Digital content creation (creating and editing digital content)

  • Safety(protecting personal data and privacy in digital environments) and,

  • Problem solving( identifying and resolving problems, using digital tools to innovate)

Our 3 volunteers from Estonia worked with us from the month of June 2021 upto August 2021 , they donated to us 8 smartphones and an internet router which we are using in our PAPO digital hub to train and empower our community members for free with DIGITAL COMPETENCIES SKILLS.

We therefore kindly seek for your support and donation so that we can be able to buy internet bundles, pay for electricity & rental bills as we allow community members to benefit from our services for free.

A GREENER WORLD

At  PAPO  we believe that a clean and safe environment can help us reduce Poverty in the World.

We encourage young pupils to start learning and practicing Environmental  conservation at an early stage.

We also empower people to plant as many trees as possible to increase the forest cover of the World by leading with good example and planting trees ourselves at any given opportunity.

We also set out vegetable nurseries, and when the seedlings are ready for transplant we supply to community members  for free.

3

ANTI-JIGGER CAMPAIGN

Jigger infestation is a painful disease that concerns a big part of Kakamega county. Many people have been suffering from jigger infestation in silence due to stigma associated with it (many community members believe that those attacked with jiggers are either bewitched or they are cursed). Children are dropping out of school, as victims too often have to face stigmatization and ridicule, their economic activity reduces due to poor health, poverty and in extreme cases: death.

PAPO is dedicated to fight this disease by building awereness and empowering the community on jigger prevention, treating and rehabilitating individuals we also donate free shoes to those we treat so as to stop re infection and fumigate infested households or classrooms, and collaborate with both the target schools and the ministry of education to form school health clubs,in the health clubs under the teacher in charge of health students are encouraged on the importance of keeping clean and focusing on personal hygiene as a means of keeping away JIGGERS and any related health risks.
